Even if the petcock is leaking, then the float valve in the carb should stop the gas from flowing. So if it were me, I'd replace or rebuild the petcock, and also rebuild the carb. Make sure to use OEM parts in the carb, if you can afford it. The K&L parts can be more trouble than they're worth. Sometimes they can't be made to work at all.
